After being canceled multiple times due to the Corona Virus, in September 2020 we were finally able to go to Winterswijk. I was really looking forward to this, as I had been to Winterswijk a few times when I was a kid. Winterswijk used to be open to the public, unfortunately nowadays it´s only open to a very select group of people for only a few times a year.
Winterswijk is a very big limestone quarry, this limestone dates all the way back to the Triassic. Some fossils that are commonly found are trackways from reptiles and fish remains, with the very occasional complete fish, and Nothosaurus bones.
After making a small 1-hour drive, we arrived at the quarry which was exactly the way I remembered it to be. The few times I visited Winterswijk as a kid, I didn´t have much luck. But this time we knew exactly in what layer we to be.
Even though we knew exactly what layer to be in, finding bones proved a bit more difficult. But after a lot of hard work, we had a few small bones and what we thought to be a Nothosaurus rib.
